When it comes down to it, the biggest thing you can do to make your air conditioner thank you is know how to clean an air conditioner. Contrary to popular opinion, they aren’t an install and leave kind of machinery. Here are our tips on how you can prepare your system for summer:

Itajaí Tip #1: Cleaning The Filters

Whenever you have a suspicion with your air conditioner’s performance, it probably comes down to tacky, damaged or dirty air filters. If your air conditioner is pouring out; hot air, strange smells, or just doesn’t seem to be working too well, the first thing you should do is check the air filters.

The air filters can become clogged with grass, dust, dirt, fur or whatever else is in the air. If this is unattended, it can build damp and mould around the filter, giving it an off-putting smell and can even be damaging for your health. Imagine coming in from exercise on a hot summer day, you go to turn the AC on only to have yucky warm air blow to the back of your sinus. Disgusting!

A clogged air filter will also force the air conditioner to work harder, so when you’re sitting there on a scorching hot day, your skin isn’t the only thing the sun will burn. Think about your poor, innocent wallet!

You should know how to clean an air conditioner filter. Here’s our method for how to clean aircon filters:

  1. 1. Remove the air filter
  2. 2. Use a soft brush to gently scrub the filter, freeing any debris and grime
  3. 3. Rinse the air filter with warm water, getting any sediment off it
  4. 4. Leave it out to dry
  5. 5. Once dry and clean, put it back

  • If it looks like it is beyond repair, go and seek a new one!

Something to think about: if you have pets or are more sensitive to allergens, you probably want to clean your air filter more frequently, around twice or more per year is our recommendation.

Tip #2: Is That Dust On The Air Duct?

Yes! If you haven’t cleaned the air ducts in some time on your air conditioner, you probably have a build up of dust. The down sides to this are very similar to the ones mentioned for a dirty filter. Dirty air ducts will activate allergies, burn your power bill, and be generally unpleasant.

The cleaning process for air ducts, however, is far easier than cleaning the air filters! Clean them like this:

  1. 1. Stand on a steady chair or support to elevate yourself
  2. 2. Use a duster or microfiber cloth to remove the dust from the ducts/vents
  3. 3. Steadily and safely stand down off the support

This can be done far more often than cleaning the air filters, the hardest part is just remembering to do it! At the very least, give it a go heading into this summer.

Tip #3: Make Sure The Outside System Is In Good Condition

This is probably the most overlooked part of air conditioner maintenance. Out of sight, out of mind, right? Wrong! You need to make sure the outside system is in good working order, it is literally the engine of your air conditioner.

First things first, remove any debris from the system and surrounding it. Believe it or not, twigs lodging rent free in your unit aren’t very good for it.  Oh but first, please promise me if you’re putting any body part in the machine you make sure there is no way it can be turned on first.

A good way to try and diagnose a problem with your outside system is to turn the air conditioner on and try to listen to any funny or suspicious noises.  If there’s still something suspicious coming from your outside unit and you’ve cleared it from all debris, you should consult an air conditioning professional. Outside units can be tricky to understand and you could end up ruining the system if you try to fix it yourself.

Tip #4: Run Diagnostic Checks

If you have done all the things mentioned above, there are checks you should run to make sure your air conditioner is running all tickity-boo. Check:

  • Is cool air coming out of the vents?
  • Are there any strange sounds coming from either unit?
  • Is there any leaking?
  • Is there a bad odour coming from the system?
  • Does the fan make a strong breeze?
  • Are the functions working?

Granted you have done steps 1 through 3, if you had to answer no to any of the checklist questions, then you should call a qualified professional. Any further troubleshooting is outside your realm of bounded rationality, and you could do more harm than good.

Tip #5: Book An Air Conditioning Service

You get your car serviced regularly, and you should get your air conditioner serviced regularly. Both machines are expensive and have complicated moving parts. Skipping a service on your air conditioner will decrease its chances to last for the summer.

An air conditioning service is more affordable than a repair, or a new split system. Additionally, if you don’t get your air conditioner serviced before summer, only to have it break during, it is likely most air conditioner technicians are busy and won’t be able to fit you in. Summer is the busy season! Get it done early!

You Need A Service, Or Your Air Con Broke?

Make sure you get your air conditioner serviced before summer. There’s no point having it run at half capacity for the busiest time, all summer long. That will just waste your time and money. Additionally, you don’t want it breaking on you on a scorching hot summer day. Just get it serviced beforehand!
